The Dirt.Simple Express - July/August 2010

Matching design to existing ground in cross sections. . .

When cross sections with medians have no dirt being moved at the center of the cross section, you can save time using GradeModel 3D and Highway 3D by daylighting to more than one point at a time with the Daylight Snap feature. Daylight Snap will enter a design line on top of the existing between two daylight points.

  1. Enter the existing ground of the cross section.
  2. Trace the design until you reach where the existing and design match.
  3. Enter a period and click to daylight.
  4. Press the period key (.) twice in rapid succession, and click on the next daylight point to Daylight Snap.
  5. The design ground snaps to the existing ground in the shaded gray area shown below.
  6. Finish entering the cross section as usual.

Reducing your calculation times. . .

Imported data, like contours, can have thousands of extra points that do not contribute to accuracy but do slow calculations. Using the Compress Selected function reduces the number of redundant points in a file and speeds calculations.

  1. Launch the program and open the file you want to compress.
  2. Select the lines you want to compress. You can select all lines in a chosen layer by selecting Edit>Select All.
  3. Select Utility>Compress Selected and the Edit Compression Delta dialog box displays.
  4. Enter the compression delta you wish to you use. The compression delta is the threshold the software uses to determine which points can be removed. It is not advisable to use a compression delta above ".1". Click OK.
  5. The program removes points using the compression delta entered in the previous step.

GradeModel 3D and Highway 3D can generate a mass haul diagram when only stations and cut/fill numbers are available. Station numbers and cut/fill values entered as a .crs file can be opened by GradeModel 3D or Highway 3D.

  1. Create a text file with the information available using the format: "station number" (space)"cut value"(space)"fill value".

  1. Save the file. Rename the file using a .crs file extension.
  2. Begin a new job and switch to Highway mode.
  3. Select File>Import and choose the .crs file you created. The information in the file is displayed in the Cross Section view.
  4. Click the Volume Report button and then OK to generate a Mass Haul Diagram.
