Below is an alphabetical list of many commands and their definitions found within Earthwork 4D.
Attach Profile
|
Used to attach the profile from a plan sheet to a digitized reference line. Also see: Plan Profile |
Area Select |
Used to select multiple objects by dragging a window around the data.
|
Authorization Manager
|
Starts the Authorization Manager program used to update, extend and make AGTEK protection keys permanent. |
Automatic Join |
This feature connects line segments when both ends of the line segments are selected. This command also join segments when snapping across gaps.
|
Auto Panning
|
This feature allows the overlay to pan in the direction of the crosshair when entering data. |
Auto Plus Marks
|
When selected, this command automatically displays plus marks. If the Plus Marks command is turned off while Auto Plus Marks is selected, Auto Plus Marks will be disabled. Use the Auto Plus Marks command to turn them on again.
|
Auto Save |
This feature Enables/Disables the Auto Save function and change the interval between saves.
|
Balance Region |
Used to Enter / Edit a balance region. Also see: Balance Regions and Editing Balance Regions |
Black/White Background |
In CAD Transfer Mode, this feature changes the background color to black or white for better viewing of data lines.

Break Line |
Breaks the line at the cursor location.
|
Bridge Gap |
Used to join multiple line segments have the same elevation endpoints. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl-J.
|
Bridge Gap Distance |
Changes the distance the Bridge Gap command will span.
|
Calc Balance |
Begins the Balance Region Calculation based on the entered Balance Regions.
|
Calc Volume
|
Begins the volume calculation based on the outer-most Report Region or Volume Area |
Colormap |
The options available under the colormap submenu are used to adjust the cut/fill shade increment, as well as the type of colors displayed.

Copy
|
Copies the currently selected data and places it in temporary memory. Also see: Copy & Paste
|
Conform Annotate |
Drapes the currently selected annotation line to the existing surface and converts it to a data line.
|
Contour Surface
|
Used to add contours to the currently selected surface at an interval determined by the user. |
Convert Daylights |
Converts Daylight Points to Entered Points of the selected line(s). Interpolated points are not converted.
|
Crop Rectangle |
Deletes all data outside the cropping window.
|
Cut Fill Elevations
|
When this option is checked, it displays the cut/fill elevations in the label of the Planview. |
Cut-Fill Lines |
Creates annotation lines where the cut transitions to the fill (daylight). Also see: Cut-Fill Lines

Cut Fill Values
|
When this option is checked, it displays the cut/fill label on the Planview. |
Delete Line |
The Delete Line command is located under the Right Mouse menu and deletes the currently selected line. The keyboard short-cut in the Delete key.

Delete
|
Deletes the currently selected data. |
Distance Culling |
Sets the visible distance for the 3D Terrain view. This allows the user to set the distance the 3D View is visible on the horizon.

Edit Layer Only |
Hides all background layers. The keyboard shortcut is Alt-V.
|
Edit Station/Offsets
|
Used to enter the station name and horizontal offset of the selected profile line. |
Elevation Labels
|
Displays elevation labels on the 2D Overlay. |
Elevation Scale |
Selects the scale factor for the 3D Terrain elevation.
|
Exit |
Quits Earthwork 4D. Prompts the user to save the job if any changes have been made since the last save.
|
File Info |
Displays the File Name and Site Min/Max Northing, Easting and elevation.
|
Fillet Line |
Generates a radius between two line segments.
|
Fixed Cut-Fill Spacing
|
When this option is checked, it displays the cut-fill locations at fixed distances. |
Frame |
This command adds a thick border around the edge of the paper on the Print Page.
|
Grid Display |
Displays a grid over the 3D Terrain.
|
Hatch Regions |
Applies a hatch pattern fill for areas/regions. See Hatch Regions
|
Hide |
Hides all selected data from view. Multiple data lines can be hidden by using Shift and the Left mouse button or by holding down the Left button and drawing a frame around the data to select then releasing the button and selecting the Hide command from the menu. The keyboard shortcut is the Alt-H.

Hide All But |
Hides everything but selected data. Multiple data lines can remain visible by using Shift and the Left mouse button or by holding down the Left button and drawing a frame around the data to select then releasing the button and selecting the Hide All But command from the menu.

Hide/Show Dialog
|
Used to toggle the display the window on the right side of the screen. |
High/Low Contrast |
Toggles the screen colors from the windows default colors to high contrast black and white.
|
Instrument Menu |
The Instrument displays your location on the job site with a cut/fill box indicating the cut or fill at that location. The instrument choices are GPS, Optical and None. If a vehicle is also displayed, the instrument becomes a part of the vehicle.

Job Info
|
Displays the Job Information window allowing you to change information about the job such as name and bid date. |
Label Selection
|
Used to select all data with the same label as the currently selected data. |
Layer Selection |
Selects which layers will be shown with the current surface. Check the boxes in the Layer Selection Window next to the data to display which layers and labels are displayed.

Length/Area Info
|
Displays the length, plane and slope area of a selected line in Edit Mode. See Length/Area_Info |
Line Labels
|
Displays line labels on the 2D Overlay. |
Max Undo Levels
|
Allows the user to change the number of actions reversed by the Undo command. |
Merge
|
Used to merge two .esw file together. |
New |
Displays the Open Window allowing the user to choose from a list of available DXF and DWG files. Select the file from the list in the window. The name then displays in the File Name text box. Press the Open button to get the file.

New Surface
|
Creates a new surface. Up to two new surfaces can exist at a time. Additional surfaces replace previous ones Also see: New_Surface |
Offset Line
|
Used to generate offset lines based off a selected reference line. |
On Grade Limit |
Sets the tolerance for the On-Grade Limit. When selected, the Edit On-Grade Limit window displays. Change the value in the text box to change the On-Grade Limit. Press the OK button to apply the limit or Cancel to abort this command. A higher number allows for more discrepancies, while a lower limit will be more precise.

Open |
Displays the Open Window allowing you to choose from a list of available ESW, DXF and DWG files. Select the file from the list in the window. The name then displays in the File Name text box. Press the Open button to get the file.

Overlay
|
When this option is checked under the Display Menu, the 2D Planview is displayed. |
Paste
|
Inserts the currently copied data from temporary memory into the currently active surface layer. Also see: Copy & Paste |
Planview Scale |
Selects the scale factor for viewing the 2D Overlay.
|
Plus Marks |
Toggles the display of (+) marks on points along all data lines. Plus marks automatically toggle Off while zooming.
|
Point Labels
|
Displays point labels on the 2D Overlay. |
|
This feature prints the data that is currently displayed on the screen.
|
Print Setup |
Displays the Page Setup Window. Used to change paper printer properties, such as paper size, orientation, margins and which printer to use.
|
Profile Entry
|
Used to enter a profile line in Profile View Mode. |
Raise/Lower |
Raises or Lowers the elevation of the selected line(s) and adjacent points.
|
Redo |
Repeats the previously cancelled edit(s) using Undo. The keyboard shortcut is Crtl-Y.
|
Region Selection
|
In Edit Mode, if a region is selected, and the command is activated, the Regions Selection window displays a tree-view of all entered regions with names. Regions can be selected press the Left Mouse button over the name in the window. The keyboard shortcut is Alt-X.

Report Region
|
Used to edit both report regions and sectional areas. |
Report Precision
|
Used to change the degree of decimal accuracy on the reports. Accuracy can be between 0 and 2 decimal places. |
Report Sectionals
|
Toggles the display of Sectional Areas from the Volume Report. |
Report Stripping
|
Toggles the display of Stripping Areas from the Volume Report. |
Rescale Site
|
Used to change the scale of the job. Also see: Rescale Site
|
Save |
Displays the Save As Window allowing the file saved as an ESW, DXF, DWG or AIP file. Select the file from the list in the window or type in the name of the file in the text box. Choose the file type and press the Save button to save the file.

Save As |
Displays the Save As Window with the current name highlighted allowing the file saved as an ESW, DXF, DWG or AIP file with a different file name. Select the file from the list in the window or type in the name of the file in the text box. Choose the file type and press the Save button to save the file.

Scale |
The 2D Overlay and the associated scalebar on the Print Page can be scaled by first selecting the overlay with the Left button. Select the Scale command from the Edit Menu. Type in the new scale and press the OK button to apply the new scale and close the window.

Select All
|
Selects all the data in the currently selected Layer. |
Send To Print Page
|
Sends the current view to the Print Preview Page. |
Shade Increment |
Used to adjust the Cut/Fill Shade Increment.
|
Shade Table
|
Used to toggle the display of the cut/fill shade table. |
Show All |
Displays all hidden data on the screen.
|
Sound Preference |
This command has a submenu which displays to the right of the command. It allows the user to choose the sound option. A check next to the option indicates which one is active.
|
Snap Size
|
Changes the size of the snap circle around the cursor. |
Staged Design |
Enable the design to be staged to the existing ground surface during editing. This allows the user to see where and how the design meets the existing ground at the boundary between the design data lines and the existing ground data lines.
|
Station Generator
|
Used to enter the station name, interval and left/right offsets on a selected profile line in Profile View Mode. |
Sticky Zoom |
Allows zoom features to zoom about the currently selected point. The keyboard shortcut is the Z key.
|
Strata Names
|
Used to edit strata names and compaction values. |
Strata Tracks OG
|
Allows the strata to slope from one bore hole to the next based on the sloping of the Original Ground. |
Swap Ends |
Switches the start and end points of a selected line and used to change the direction of the line.
|
Tablet Entry
|
Enables/Disable the use of the digitizer for scaled data entry. |
Tablet Scale
|
Used to scale the digitizer to the plan sheet. |
Terrain
|
When this option is checked under the Display Menu, the 3D Terrain or Cut/Fill shade map is displayed depending on mode. |
Title Block |
Adds a Title Block across the bottom of the page of the Print Page. A Title Block can only be added if a Frame has been added first.
|
Transfer Subgrade
|
Creates data lines at the subgrade elevations in the Data Lines layer of the Design Surface. All sectional areas are then deleted. |
Trim Line
|
Breaks all lines which intersect the selected trim line. |
Undo
|
Cancels the last edit(s) up to eight stored in memory. The keyboard shortcut is Crtl-Z. |
User Cut Fill Locations
|
Displays the Cut Fill values at locations entered in the Cut/Fill Labels layer of the Design surface. |
Vehicle Arrow Rate
|
The Vehicle Arrow Rate is the distance covered in the 3D View mode when navigating with the arrow keys or during a drive-through. |
Vehicle Scale
|
Used to adjust the size of the displayed vehicle. |
Volume Area
|
Automatically enters a region around all the data for a total volume calculation. |
